Europe
Europe offers an endless choice of towns and villages, an abundance of ski runs and interconnecting lifts, history and a chic and vibrant lifestyle unique to the European nations.
Italy will host the 2006 Winter Olympics at Torino in February. Italy's skiing spreads from the French border in the west to the stunning Dolomites in the east, with French, Italian & German spoken in different areas. Resorts situated in the western part of the Italian Alps can be compared to famous French ski regions. The Dolomites, the eastern part of the Italian Alps, provide tourists with Europe's best sightseeing opportunities. Add the traditional Italian hospitality and a heady mix of wining and dining and you can be sure that spending your northern winter in Italy is a great choice.
Skiing in France takes place in two parts of the country: the Alps and the much smaller Pyrennes. The policy of one ski pass accepted by many resorts greatly improves quality of service and provides the skier with an incredible choice of skiing trails every day during their holiday. Les Trois Vallees, for example, is made up of the three valleys of Courchevel, Meribel and Val Thorens, with a massive 600km of ski runs. French resorts really vary in style. Spending a winter holiday in France is quite expensive in comparison to Austria or Italy, but the skiing possibilities here will let you forget the cost. France also has some of the most extreme ski areas in the world.
The Alps cover most of Austria, so its really no surprise that this country is also one of Europe's top ski destinations. Austrai is, quite simply, a skiing paradise. Thousands of kilometres of perfectly prpared ski routes offer superb conditions for every skier - no matter whether you are looking for an easy slope, long and wide curves, or a really difficult route that will let you rush down the hill. Those who prefer to free-ride in deep snow or skiing on wild slopes will definitely not be disappointed.
A couple of the best-known European ski resorts are situated in Switzerland. St Moritz - the international centre of sports and fashion - is renowned for its superb atmosphere and tradition. Many of the most attractive Swiss winter resorts are located in the Wallis Canton and include the commanding Matterhorn, which overlooks Zermatt at the height of 4478 metres. Finally, the Swiss ski resorts are easily accessible by car or train which is a plus when travelling long distances.
