Travel 40kms through picturesque rural farming land, past NZ's largest man made forest – "Kaingaroa", to the base of Mt Tarawera volcano. 4WD 10kms to the craters edge for a crater walk or for the adventurous experience the famous scree slide into the crater, or hike to the summit (1111m).

The 1886 Eruption, Excavation, History and Gallery Museum situated near Lake Tarawera. Each of the archaeological sites and displays are linked by a meandering pathway and interpreted through interesting information panels, signs and guide map. Since 1886 the pristine New Zealand native bush has regenerated with the Lakes area returning to its former glory. Amongst the excavated sites you will find a special peacefulness, 12-acres of park like setting filled with tall trees, meadows, birds, wildlife and tranquillity.
