 Hiking New Zealand

There are 14 National Parks in New Zealand. The Department of Conservation administers these as well as many Forest Parks and reserves. These parks and reserves cover a third of New Zealand and offer a large variety of hiking experiences for the visitor.

The "Great Walks" are New Zealand's most famous and most popular tramping tracks.  These tracks take you to some of the really spectacular places in the back country and are clearly marked and take between two and four days to walk.  The exception is the Whanganui Journey which is a river journey by raft, canoe or kayak taking up to 6 days.
