Splendours of Andalusia & Toledo

This small group tour takes you on a journey of discovery through Andalusia – a land of wonders where Muslim, Jewish, Gypsy and Christian civilizations co-existed for many centuries. Start in the capital city Madrid and continue to Cordoba, a unique Unesco World Heritage site where the Old Jewish Quarter – La Juderia, has nestled for centuries around the Grand Mosque, itself reconverted and rebuilt through the years from Mosque to Cathedral and back again. Visit effervescent Sevilla, Granada – the jewel of Andalusia with its narrow street and magnificent Alhambra and conclude your tour at medieval Toledo known for its extensive cultural and artistic heritage including works of painter El Greco hidden in Cathedrals, Churches & museums around the city before returning to Madrid.

ITINERARY
     

     
Day 1 - Monday
 
Madrid
     

Arrive in Madrid and enjoy a welcome drink and orientation session at the hotel in the evening.

       
Day 2 - Tuesday
    Madrid
     

After breakfast set out on a morning tour of the city of Madrid: Visit the medieval Arabic Fortress and the Barrio de la Moreria ~ characterised by the antiquity of its buildings.  Drive through the courtesan district of the Hapsburgs with its Renaissance and Baroque style buildings; Puerto del Sol; Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Ville.  Gain an understanding of the Madrid of the Bourbons and the complex town planning schemes of Charles III.  Visit the interior of the Royal Palace, Cibeles and Neptuno Fountains, and the Puerta de Alcala.  Admire the Prado Museum.

The tour also visits contemporary Madrid with its Gran Via, Castellana, the Salamanca District, Plaza Castilla and Parque del Oeste, the commercial and financial zones of modern Madrid, the emblematic Las Ventas Bull Ring and the Santiago Bernabeu Football Stadium.  The balance of the day is free to continue exploring the wonders the city has to offer. 

                                       
     
Day 3 - Wednesday
    Madrid - Cordoba - Seville
      After breakfast you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the Julia Travel bus terminal in Plaza de Espana 7.  Departure at 8.30 am to drive southward through the land of Don Quixote (The man from La Mancha) past vast vineyards.  Cross through the natural border of "Despenaperros" and arrive in Andalucia, a region with a vast heritage of time gone.  Reach Cordoba and tour its Mosque and other sites, including a stroll through the narrow streets of the Jewish Quarter.  In the afternoon there is a short 2 hour journey to Seville.  Dinner & accommodation at the hotel.
       
Day 4 - Thursday
    Seville
     

After breakfast set out on a morning Monuments and Panoramic city tour including the interior of the Cathedral - the second largest in the Catholic world after St Peters in rome.  The Santa Cruz Quarter where the myth of Don Juan developed, The Maria Luisa Park and Spain Square.  The afternoon is free for you to shop or explore to your hearts content.  Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

Day 5 - Friday
    Seville - Granada
     

After breakfast at the hotel drive east through the Caliphate Road to the heart of Andalucia passing a multitude of olive trees on the way to Granada - the last stronghold of the Moorish Kingdoms up to 1492.  Visit the world famous Alhambra (Red Palace) and Generalife Gardens ~ made up of fountains, gardens and patios that have inspired several authors such as W. Irving.  Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

Day 6 - Saturday
    Granada - Toledo - Madrid
      Breakfast at the hotel.  Drive northward towards Toledo (a World Heritage City) where Christians, Moors and Jews lived together.    Redolent with art, history and spirituality, the whole town is a National Monument.  The city tour includes the most important monuments, the narrow streets and the famous "Damasquinado" (gold and silver inlaying in iron).  Continue to Madrid for your overnight hotel accommodation.
       
Day 7 - Sunday
    Madrid
      Breakfast at the hotel and end of your tour.
