  Greece is a beloved destination, and in addition to the more familiar islands the mainland offers plenty of options for a classic Mediterranean Holiday.  You'll find unspoilt fishing villages full of tranquil charm and great city breaks.  This holiday lets you explore the wealth of archaeological sites, fascinating culture, spectacular coastline and picture perfect scenery.


Day 1 Athens - Olympia
Morning departure to the Corinth Canal and then to the Theatre of Epidaurus (famous for its remarkable acoustics). Then proceed to the towns of Nauplion and Mycenae to visit the archaeological site and tomb of Agamemnon. Later travel to Olympia through the central Peloponnese and the towns of Tripolis and Megapoli. Overnight in Olympia. (D)

Day 2 Olympia - Delphi
This morning visit the archaeological site which includes the sanctuary of Zeus, the ancient (Olympic) stadium and archaeological museum. Travel through the plains of Ilia and Achaia before crossing the Corinthian Bay into Delphi via Nafpactos and Itea. (B,D)

Day 3 Delphi - Meteora
After visiting the archaeological site and museum of Delphi, continue on to Kalambaka, a small town situated at the foot of the astonishing complex of Meteora - gigantic rocks that rise steeply from the plain of Thessaly.  (B,D)

Day 4 Meteora - Thessaloniki
Visit Meteora, where ageless monasteries sit atop gigantic rocks.The monasteries are known for their Byzantine art.  Later drive through the plains of Thessaly and the Valley of Tempi to Mt Olympus home of the 12 Gods of Greek mythology. Overnight in Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city (B,D)

Day 5 Thessaloniki
Morning tour of this 'co-reigning' city of the Byzantine Empire - second in population and prestige only to Constantinople.  Visit unique unique monuments and churches as well as the Museum of Byzantine Culture.  Remainder of the day free to experience the lively centre of the city.  (B,D)

Day 6 Thessaloniki -Edessa - Naoussa - Vergina - Veria - Thessaloniki
Morning departure to picturesque Edessa known for its waterfalls.  Next proceed to Naoussa - an important site with Aristotle's School, before continuing to Vergina (ancient Aigai) to view the unique Museum in the Great Tumulus covering the royal tombs of Macedonia.  View the items found in the tomb of King Phillip II (Alexander's father).  A few miles away is Veria (Biblical Beroea) and a visit to Saint Paul's Bema followed by a stroll through the old Jewish neighbourhood and colourful market area.  Return to Thessaloniki. Day 7 Athens
Depart for Pella, the capital city of Alexander the Great.  View the 4th Century BC villa floor mosaics both in situ and in the new Museum.  This is followed by a visit to the Archaeological Park of Dion (a Macedonian sacred city at the foot of Mt Olympia). Drive south through Thessaly, Lamia, Thermopylae (see the Leonidas' Monument) and Thebes to arrive in Athens late in the afternoon. (B)
