Since the Mycenean Greeks settled in Cyprus over 3000 years ago, establishing the Greek civilization on the island, there have been Romans, Crusaders, Phoenecians, Franks, Venetians and other conquerors who have all left their mark and these have shaped the island's special character. Aphrodite, mythological goddess of beauty, was born here and spawned a huge cult in pagan times. Yet on these same shores St. Paul himself introduced Christianity to Cyprus by converting the first ever Roman Governor in 45 AD.
