Itinerary

Day 1 VENICE

We board our floating hotel from 6pm at the San Basilio Quay (Vaporetto station, Santa Marta) and settle into our cabins. We have a welcome cocktail in the lounge bar and are introduced to the crew. We cruise to our mooring point for tonight at the Seven Martyrs Quay before we have dinner in the on board restaurant. The rest of the evening is free.

Day 2 VENICE
We have breakfast on board this morning before setting off on our visit of Venice, beginning in what is the historic and tourist centre of the town, St Mark's Square. This is Venice's only true piazza with an awe-inspiring basilica, soaring campanile and magnificent Doge's Palace. The palace is Byzantine in origin and used to be the home of the Doge and the seat of the Palace of Justice. We return on board for lunch before our afternoon excursion to visit the islands in the Lagoon. We begin in Murano, home of Venice's glassmaking industry since the late 13th century and a beautiful little island to visit. We then visit Burano, famous for its lacework which was developed on the island in the 16th century, and well loved by artists for its quayside houses painted in startlingly bright and contrasting colours. We return on board for dinner and moor for the night.

Day 3 VENICE - CHIOGGIA (or nearby) - TAGLIO DI PO
We have breakfast on board and a relaxing morning afloat as we cruise to Chioggia, where we arrive late morning. After lunch on board, we set off on our guided visit of Padua, the main setting for Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Known as the town of St Anthony, Padua is also a pilgrimage town and full of artistic treasures.  After our visit of the famous "Santo" Basilica dedicated to Saint Anthony, we have plenty of free time to wander at our own pace and explore the historic centre independently. Do try to make time to visit the magnificent 19th century Café Pedrocchi, one of the largest cafes in the world and much loved by artists and local inhabitants alike. We return on board for dinner as our floating hotel cruises gently to Taglio di Po, where we arrive late evening and moor for the night.

Day 4 TAGLIO DI PO – POLESELLA
We have breakfast on board this morning as we cruise to Polesella, where we arrive late morning. After lunch on board, we set off by coach on our excursion to Verona. This town has the largest collection of Roman remains and artefacts in northern Italy and of course was made famous by Shakespeare's tragic and impossible love story of Romeo and Juliet. We return on board at Polesella for dinner. Tonight, we have an evening show entitled "Italian art and traditions" at Crespino (minimum of 45 participants required). We moor for the night at Polesella.

Day 5

POLESELLA

We have breakfast on board this morning before we set off on our excursion to discover Ferrara. Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this Renaissance town is surrounded by a continuous wall almost 9km long (approximately 5.6 miles) which is one of the oldest and most impressive defensive systems of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It makes use of all the defence techniques used in the 1400s and 1500s: city gates, bastions, large towers, gun slots and embrasures. Inside the walls we find many palaces, churches and monasteries. We return to Polesella for lunch on board and then set off by coach for our excursion to Bologna. Bologna is famous today for its arcades or porticos, balconies, many churches and curved towers. It is also home to the oldest university in the western world. This cultural influence gave Bologna its nickname la Dotta (the learned one). We return on board for dinner and the boat heads back to Venice.

Day 6 VENICE
We arrive in Venice early morning and have breakfast before setting off on foot for our visit of the Castello Quarter in search of the secret Venice through its old quarters to the Church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo. The Church is the largest Gothic building in the town housing many funerary monuments and paintings, including some of Bellini's masterpieces (1430-1516), in particular his famous depictions of Saint Christopher and Saint Sebastian. After lunch on board, the afternoon is free to explore Venice independently on foot or perhaps take a gondola trip. We return on board for dinner and a special Gala evening. We moor for the night in Venice.
