Naples, Amalfi Coast, Aeolian Islands, Sicily & Calabria

 NEW FOR 2016

DAYS: 8 Days

After settling into your cabins there is a crew introduction and welcome cocktail.  Dinner and a night in port follows.

DAY 2        NAPLES

The morning will be dedicated to a visit to Pompeii. A reminder of the violent forces that lie deep inside Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii is Europe's most compelling archaeological site and one of Italy's most visited tourist attractions.

A visit to Herculaneum. Herculaneum's fate runs parallel to Pompeii. Destroyed by an earthquake in 62 AD, the subsequent eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD saw it submerged in a sea of mud that essentially fossilised the city. Discover the wealth of archaeological finds, from ancient advertisements and stylish mosaics, to carbonised furniture and inhabitants.

In the afternoon visit Naples. Italy's third-largest city is one of its oldest, most eccentric, and most delicious. We'll discover the must-see sites such as Old Naples, the Royal Palace of Naples (outside), and the Cappella Sansevero (indoor), containing the masterpiece Veiled Christ, renowned world over for the remarkable tissue-like quality of the marble. Return on board and start your cruise towards Milazzo. Neapolitan themed night on board while the ship continues to cruise through the night.

DAY 3

The morning will be spent cruising to the Aeolian Islands(3). Rising out of the cobalt-blue seas off Sicily's northeastern coast, the UNESCO-protected Aeolian Islands are a little piece of paradise.  The chain of islands is named after the demigod of the winds, Aeolus. Arrive in Milazzo early afternoon and join an excursion to Tindari. Discover the Sanctuary of the Black Madonna built on a promontory overhanging the entire Gulf of Patti and its immense Tonnarai d'Oliveri lagune. This will be followed by a visit to the archaeological site with the Greek theatre, thermal baths and mosaics. At the end of the visit, tasting of Sicilian products (bruschetta, Sicilian cooked meats, etc.). Return on board. Tonight's dinner will be followed by an evening of dancing on board. Remain in port overnight.

DAY 4   MESSINE (Sicily)

Day trip (lunch included) to Mount Etna and Taormina(4). Spend an unforgettable day combining a visit to these two exceptional sites. The largest active volcano in Europe. To the ancient Greeks, Mount Etna was the realm of Vulcan, god of fire, and the home of the one-eyed monster known as the Cyclops. The bleak lava wilderness around the summit of Etna is one of the most memorable landscapes you'll ever see. Then continue to Taormina, idyllically perched on a rock high above the sea, Taormina incarnates the legendary beauty of Sicily. Its Greek-Roman theatre is not to be missed. Tonight's evening will have a Sicilian theme.

Depart on an excursion to Calabria (the toe of the boot) in the extreme south of Italy - lapped by the splendid crystal-clear Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas. Its warm climate, beautiful colours, rocky coasts, local food and the vestiges of its ancient origins make Calabria a unique place to be enjoyed in both winter and summer. The visit begins in Tropea, a seaside resort with impressive scenery. It has that lovely, timeless, faded feel characteristic of sleepy southern Italian seaside towns. After a tasting of some local delicacies continue to Capo Vaticano, known for its dramatic cliffs, breathtaking views, and crystal-clear waters. Afterwards head to Pizzo, one of the hidden gems of Calabria. The center of Pizzo is a picturesque network of narrow lanes bustling with modern Calabrian life. After dinner, entertainment will be provided by the crew. Cruise towards Salerno throughout the night.

Spend the morning cruising along the Amalfi Coast. Designated by UNESCO as an outstanding example of a Mediterranean landscape, the Amalfi Coast combines great beauty and gripping drama: coastal mountains plunge into the sea among the deep crags, picturesque towns and lush forests. Visit the villages along the Amalfi Coast. Discover Sorrento, and its extraordinary gardens and landscapes. Next visit Amalfi, with its sun-filled piazzas and small beaches. Return on board in Salerno. Tonight is a gala dinner and evening. Our boat will cruise during the night.

Full-day excursion to Capri and Anacapri (lunch included). Set off for Capri by airboat. On arrival, head to the village of Anacapri and visit the villa San Michele, built at the turn of the last century by Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe. Anacapri is located in the highest part of the island, and from the villas gardens you'll have a fantastic view of the city of Capri, the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.  Anacapri is saturated with the colours, scents and light of the Mediterranean. In the afternoon, enjoy some free time on your own or visit the Gardens of Augustus, offering splendid views of the sea and fantastic photographic vistas. Return to Naples by airboat. Dinner and a folk show onboard. Remain in port overnight.
