The Alsace-Lorraine Canals by Barge

Adored by boating tours, this part of the canal (also known as the Greenway) crosses the plain of Alsace and the Vosges.  It links Strasbourg and Saverne - the entryway to Alsace at the foot of the Vosges mountains - and continues through a grand forest to Lutzelbourg in the Lorraine region.   Its spectacular architecture and many structural works include the Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane (unique in Europe) where boats are hoisted along the cliff before reaching Xouaxange, a charming small town in the Lorraine.  During this week you will sample several amazing wines and cheeses and eat some truly gourmet foods
DAYS: 7 Days

BOAT: MS Madeleine

Boarding at 6pm.  Welcome cocktail and crew presentation.  Followed by a visit of Old Strasbourg on a small river boat (depending on availability) where you sail to the 'Petite France', a well-known part of the town with its white half-timbered houses.
DAY 2

After a morning spend cruising you will undertake the Hops Path of Waltenheim excursions.  Travel by coach to Wingersheim for your hops walking tour through the unexpected and captivating landscape of Alsace, an area famed for making both wine and beer. Followed by a well earned beer tasting.  This evening dine in a Waltenheim restaurant to taste 'Tarte Flambee' - a local speciality.
DAY 3

You have the option this morning to enjoy a leisurely cruise, or go for a walk or cycle along the marked paths that line the canal. In the afternoon enjoy some free time in Saverne before the visit to the Haut-Barr Castle - often called 'The Eye of Alsace' with its unrivalled views over the Alsace Plain.  This is a listed historical monument.  Situated 470m high on three huge rocks, it is connected to a footbridge called the 'Devil Bridge'.

This morning enjoy a guided tour of Saverne.  Off the usual beaten track, Saverne offers a multitude of places to discover.  The main street with its unicorn fountain, the Katz house with its half timbered walls, the church of Notre Dame with a porch tower from the 12th century and the former convent of the Recollets founded in the 14th century.  Continue cruising in the afternoon, with the chance to walk to the castle of Lutzelbourg, one of the most beautiful canal-side villages in France.
Today you will cast off for the Arzviller inclined plane - a truly unforgettable experience.  This type of transverse boat lift is the only one of its kind in Europe.  The inclined plain replaces 17 locks spread over a 4km stretch and saves a days travel.  Today the journey takes only 4 minutes.  Stop at the crystal workshop and learn about crystal blowing, etching and carving techniques of old.
Day 6
After a morning spent cruising enjoy a guided tour of Sarrebourg.  Sarrebourg has a rich diversity of attractions.  Its historic and cultural heritage holds many unexpected treasures such as the only stained glass window by Marc Chagall!  Tonight enjoy a Gala Dinner on board
