This is the perfect itinerary to experience culture, wildlife and sample Ceylon Tea.  Start with a visit to an Elephant Orphanage before heading to the cultural triangle where highlights include magnificent Buddha statues, striking former royal palaces and the famous Sigiriya rock fortress.  Continue to the verdant hill country and tea plantations with a visit to Uda Walawe National Park.

Day 1   Colombo - Negombo (35 km)
    Welcome to Sri Lanka.  Upon arrival meet, assist  and transfer to your hotel in Negombo.
     
Day 2
  Negombo - Pinnawala - Sigiriya (150 km)


Drive to Sigiriya with a stop enroute to visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, which rescues and provides protection to many of the wild baby elephants found in the forests of Sri Lanka.  Overnight in Sigiriya. (B)
     
Day 3
  Sigiriya - Polonnaruwa - Sigiriya (100 km)

  This morning climb up to the summit of the Sigiriya rock fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The fortified settlement atop Sigiriya dates back to the 5th century AD and is a stupendous architectural achievement.  Admire the mural paintings hidden in the caves of the fortress.  Later continue to ancient Polonaruwa, the medieval capital and crown jewel of King Parakramabahu.  Explore the ancient ruins including stupas, resting Buddha statues, irrigation canals, Hindu sculptures and stone carvings.  Return to Sigiriya for overnight stay. Day 4
  Sigiriya - Matale - Kandy (100 km)
    This morning drive to Matale, a region synonymous with spices.  Explore a local spice garden, savour a cup of herbal tea and wander around town before continuing to Kandy (the last royal capital before the city went under British rule).  Visit the Temple of the Tooth, where according to the ancient Kandyan legacy the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha is kept.  Explore the city centre - its bazaar and colourful fruit & vegetable market.  This evening attend a traditional music and cultural show. (B)
     
Day 5   Kandy - Nanu Oya - Nuwara Eliya
    Discover the misty mountains of the hill country on a morning train ride to Nanu Oya.  Upon arrival visit a tea plantation to learn about the traditional Ceylon Tea making process.  End your visit over a perfectly blended cup of pure Ceylon Tea.  Your day progresses with a short tour of Nuwara Eliya, once governed by English and Scottish planters, known for its colonial bungalows, hedgerows and an excellent 18-hole golf course. (B)
     
Day 6
  Nuwara Eliya - Uda Walawe NP (100 km)
 
Embark on a drive to Uda Walawe National Park and explore elephant country.  Join a safari jeep and head into the park, famous for its large herds of elephants (one of the best places to observe them in their natural habitat).  There is also the possibility of spotting deer, water buffalo and jackals.  Overnight in the park (B)
     
Day 7              Uda Walawe NP - Ratnapura - Colombo (170 km)


Ratnapura is known for its gems, so today you will visit a gem museum and watch how the stones are cut and polished to perfection.  Continue to Colombo and take a city tour upon arrival.  See the crystal white race, the floating markets and the 'Arcade' - a colonial masterpiece which today hosts many trendy boutiques and shops.  Overnight Colombo. (B)
     
Day 8
  Colombo
    Departure transfer to the airport for your onward flight - or perhaps a continuation to the Maldives. (B)
