Upon arrival visit the Thagyar Pone Temple.  An exquisite example of Bagan classical architecture, this temple offers superb panoramic views of the Bagan Plains.  Continue to the village of Myinkaba and the temple of Gubyaukgyi to admire the beautiful murals and carvings.  Next learn about the local culture with a visit to two workshops producing Bagan's most famous products: lacquer ware and wood crafts.  See the skilled craftsmen create beautiful items with traditional techniques passed down through the generations.
Day 4

Morning optional hot air balloon ride over the Bagan Plain.
Visit the vibrant Nyaung Oo Market and the Shwezigon Pagoda, built by King Anawrahta in the early 11th century as a religious memorial.  Then visit Taungbi Monastery where you will participate in a traditional Buddhist ceremony.  Witness an alms procession where, alongside locals, you will donate offerings of food to the monks and receive a special blessing to ensure good luck and happiness.  Afternoon bike ride (can be replaced by a vehicle transfer) to the little visited village of Minnanthu.  Visit Payathonzu and Lementha Temples and Kyat Kan Cave Monastery.

Day 5

Bagan (Cruise)
Late morning transfer to the Aye Yar jetty to board your cruise ship for the next two nights - the R/V Paukan.  Enjoy the scenes of life on the Irrawaddy as you cruise upstream and see the spires of Bagan's temple disappearing in the horizon.  Stop at a small village on the banks of the river, meet the locals and gain an understanding of the river residents' way of life.  Return to the boat and continue to a small riverside village to moor for the night.  Dinner is served on board followed by time to relax on deck and enjoy the tranquil evening. (B,L,D)

Day 6

Mandalay (Cruise)
Today is a cruising day on the Irrawaddy, with time to relax and view the scenery, boats, fishermen and villages as you pass by.  Stop for a shore excursion to Yandabo.  This town, which played a key role in Myanmar's history (it is here that the Anglo-Burma peace treaty was signed in 1826) is today a tranquil pottery craft centre.  Walk around and view families crafting clay water post using age-old techniques.  Continue upstream and moor near the famous Ava Bridge, just south of Mandalay for overnight. (B,L,D)

Day 7

Disembark this morning.  Meet your private guide and depart for a visit of Mandalay.  One of the most evocative names in travel, Mandalay was the last royal capital of Burma prior to British rule in the mid 19th century.  Begin your tour with a visit to the Mahamuni Pagoda, home to the country's most honoured Buddha images, completely covered in gold leaves.  Later visit Kuthodaw Pagoda, also known as 'The World's Biggest Book' due to its collection of 729 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist teachings.  Continue to the Shwenandaw Monastery with its remarkable woodcarvings.  Conclude the day with a visit to the Shwe Kyin Monastery and observe how, just after sunset, the young student monks gather for their evening prayer. (B)

Day 8

Mandalay – Heho – Inle Lake
Flight to Heho followed by a drive to Nyaung Shwe, gateway to Inle Lake.  Travel by private motorboat on Inle Lake. See the many floating villages and their gardens, Nga Hpe Chaung Monastery and its jumping cats and Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda. (B)
