Nowhere on the planet do the modern and the ancient co exist more harmoniously than in Japan.  Kimono clad ladies talk on futuristic phones while travelling on some of the fastest trains in the world; thousand year old Zen temples are dwarfed by skyscrapers with their neon signs; whilst in the countryside you can view flooded rice paddies studded with green.

Japan is a small, long and highly volcanic archipelago.  Two thirds of Japan are covered in mountains.  In the warmer months there is excellent hiking through cedar groves and fields .. up to soaring peaks and ancient shrines.  In the winter all is covered with snow and the skiing is world class.  Meanwhile, in the southern reaches there are tropical beaches for sun bathing and water sports galore.  Exciting cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Yokohama and Kyoto are all linked by smooth and efficient train systems, so travelling is easy.

Japan offers the chance to experience their traditional cultures with the opportunity to stay in ryokan (traditional inns) sleeping on futons and tatami mats.  Chant with monks or learn how to wear a kimono and prepare tea.  From the splendour of a Kyoto geisha dance to the spare beauty of a Zen rock garden, Japan has the power to enthral even the most jaded traveller.
