Leading the way to the World's best kept secrets....

Welcome to Ancient Kingdoms Holidays - the jigsaw which links ancient and modern civilisations

When we look back to the past it seems this ancient world has very little connection to our modern day life especially when viewing sites such as the Pyramids, Petra, Volubilis or ancient Greek wonders.  However, nature has reminded mankind throughout civilisation that we are part of a much greater universe and everything is not always under human control.  From the great civilisations of Alexander the Great who conquered the world, to ancient Sparta which in 464 BC suffered a massive earthquake, to Petra which in the 6th century suffered the same fate, there has been the illusion that life is under control!  In our modern world, perhaps even more with amazing technology available, from sending a pre-recorded message to our TV from the office chair, to chatting across the world on Skype .....

..... However, the recent earthquakes in Christchurch and in other parts of the world have shown us all that perhaps the world is not so different now, as from 5,000 years ago.  Through history there are threads and events that link us all, which have been recorded for posterity.

The Roman historian Ammianus Marcelinus described in detail a tsunami hitting Alexandria in the early hours of 21 July 465AD.  This great Minoan earthquake also reshaped modern Santorini, an island of amazing formations and natural beauty.  The ancient Egyptians captured some of their momentous natural events on papyrus and in ancient paintings, inscribed forever in tombs.

As you explore these ancient kingdoms there is a reminder that we too, in Christchurch, will be part of history and future generations will look back to see how more recent events impacted our world and view the inspiration that arose from the ashes as we look to rebuild our city.  Knowing that these events are part of time immemorial can be a comfort with the knowledge that, somehow, our ancient counterparts prevailed in tough times to rebuild their cities with fortitude and vision.

We are part of an evolving jigsaw with all the pieces of the puzzle not yet solved.  Maybe, as we look back and explore ancient civilisations it is my hope we will find answers to inspire us for the future.
